The 30×30 Project: Where We’ve Been, Where We Are, and Where We’re Going

We are so excited to officially announce the second year of the 30×30 Project! We’ve produced four (4) all-new solution areas to complement our existing library, bringing the total to 10 solutions you can learn about and explore. We’ve also developed a new Get Involved section that outlines what actions are available to you right now, regardless of where you live, to take action in support of these solutions.

But, first, a recap:

What Is the 30x30 Project?

The 30×30 Project is a digital microsite that tours you through the 30×30 target (an initiative established by the United Nations that aims to conserve 30% of our freshwater, oceans, and lands by 2030) along with the global solutions taking place to achieve this goal. The 30×30 Project was created as part of the Mosaic 2023 Movement Infrastructure grant program.

We developed the 30×30 Project after identifying a significant gap in knowledge about the 30×30 target, despite it being a major international goal with less than a decade remaining to be achieved. That’s a problem because, historically, world governments aren’t exactly known for moving quickly when it comes to the climate. However, we know it can be done. In fact, the best example of cooperation at this speed and scale is the Montreal Protocol, which successfully initiated the global phase-out of ozone-harming chemicals called chlorofluorocarbons.

So, why the 30×30 Project? To bring accessible education about 30×30 straight to you! Designed to reflect an interactive museum exhibit, the 30×30 Project allows users to follow the threads of content that interest them most, clicking on pop-ups to expose more detailed information throughout each solution page.

Year 1

The first six (6) solutions published as part of the 30×30 Project were selected to represent a diverse array of work addressing some of the most critical land and water issues we’re facing today. To create these solution pages, we partnered with experts from within EarthShare’s Partner Network to bring this information to life with accuracy and relevancy. In April 2024, we rolled out these six solutions.

ALL NEW: Year 2

In the second year of the 30×30 Project, we knew we wanted to focus on expanding our Solutions Library and giving microsite visitors an easier, more immediate way to take action and support the solutions and related nonprofits that interest them most.

Growing the Solutions Library meant adding four (4) all-new solutions alongside four additional experts from our Nonprofit Network:

  • Renewable Energy Adoption in partnership with EESI

These four solutions help provide additional context to the wide array of solutions taking place in our communities to address land and water conservation and biodiversity. Humans and the environment are vastly interconnected—as are the solutions for a healthier future.

To help people engage more with the environment and natural spaces they love, and to make contributing toward the 30×30 goal easier than ever before, we built out a new Get Involved section at the bottom of every solution in our Library! This gives visitors a more streamlined ways to donate, volunteer, find events near them, message and call their elected representatives (with scripts), share information about the 30×30 Project microsite with their communities, and more.

Moving Forward

We can’t wait for you to explore the new updates to the 30×30 Project, but we don’t intend to stop here. EarthShare intends to continue driving public awareness and education about the 30×30 target. With less than five years until 2030, it’s now more important than ever that we bridge these awareness gaps and build momentum for a healthy future for all.

Want to get involved and stay up to date on the next iterations of the 30×30 Project and everything EarthShare has in store? Follow us on our social media channels and subscribe to our newsletter to receive timely updates!

If you’re interested in providing us feedback on the 30×30 Project microsite experience, we have a brief survey you can fill out here. This survey is also linked in the footer of the microsite!

Enjoy the microsite experience? Please share it with your friends, family, coworkers, and community! Public support is needed now more than ever to protect the lands, waters, and biodiversity we all love and rely on. This includes our National Parks and Forests, outdoor recreation, food systems, the wildlife in our backyards, so much more.

Finally, a huge thank you to all our readers and donors—this project could only continue thanks to your dedicated readership, constructive feedback, and ongoing support of EarthShare and our Partners. We hope you will continue to support and share the 30×30 Project as we steer toward a healthier, better future for us all.
