IV. Quick Guide: How-To Use the Platform
From donating money to organizing volunteer events to educating your team about important environmental initiatives, the Platform offers a variety of actions your company can take to support the issues and causes you care about most. This list provides an overview of the key actions you can take using the platform.
1. Organize Corporate and Organizational Giving
2. Activate Employee Giving
If an individual employee so chooses, they can donate to EarthShare Nonprofit Partners or to any of the 1.5M+ nonprofits connected on the Platform. The process begins by connecting a payment method to the employee’s account, and EarthShare makes this as easy as possible by giving employees multiple ways to fund their giving accounts. Funding can happen in one or more of these three ways:
Worthy of Note: Payroll giving provides a great benefit to employees and is a best practice for capturing more and larger donations. Payroll deductions also put more money in the hands of nonprofits by eliminating ACH or credit card processing fees.
3. Plan Campaigns and Fundraisers
Create a special campaign or fundraiser for the cause(s) of your choice, perhaps in celebration of an anniversary, an employee achievement, a significant milestone for your company, or simply to stand up for an issue that you care about. Feature campaigns with your employees or use sharing options to promote it to external stakeholders. You can create a campaign through the Platform to support any cause(s) or work within a geographic region that your company cares about. Once these campaigns are established, the hard work is all done. As donations come in, they are distributed automatically based on how you’ve elected to allocate funds to the nonprofit beneficiaries.
If you don’t have the bandwidth to build your own, join an EarthShare-created campaign already set up for you, and support one or multiple nonprofit organizations.
4. Volunteer with Nonprofits for Public and Private Events
Engaged employees are happier employees! Among Millennial age workers, 83% wish their employer would provide volunteer opportunities they could do with friends or family, compared to the 66% U.S. average. (GlobeScan and BBMG, Radically Better Future: The Next Gen Reckoning Report, 2020). In addition to donating money to trusted environmental nonprofits, consider embracing volunteering as a key element of your employee engagement strategy. Many organizations find it beneficial to tie philanthropic giving to volunteering to create a more robust and beneficial experience. Once your organization has selected an environmental issue area to focus on, or particular nonprofits to support, consider volunteering for the same cause(s). By allowing your employees to experience the impact of the work, they will be more connected to the cause(s) you are supporting.
The Platform supports listings for both private and public volunteer events, providing you and your employees with easy access to a range of volunteer event options. The easiest way to begin a volunteer program is to simply encourage your team to search for opportunities and to opt in to the experiences that get them most excited. Given the nature of today’s changing world, EarthShare has curated a number of remote volunteer activities that individuals can do at any time from any location. Have 30 minutes of downtime at your desk? Why not take advantage and create impact!

6. Search and Select Trusted Nonprofit Organizations
We understand that individuals often need support to find nonprofits they trust, but they also want choice. We provide both. Our platform has a curated list of EarthShare Nonprofit Partners that have been vetted to ensure their environmental credentials and overall credibility. We also offer a searchable database of more than 1.5M 501c3 organizations for donors who give outside the environmental sector. Administrators have the option of restricting visibility of various categories of nonprofits (ex. political).
Your team members can search through the list and choose which organizations they would like to support (this is outside of the nonprofits that you choose to support as a business and is based on the individual team member’s preference).
7. Learn More about Environmental Causes and Issues
While a searchable database is an awesome place to start for learning about the environment and the nonprofits that support it, we also produce educational content about issues from the history of the environmental justice movement to real-time updates about urgent environmental legislation. In addition, our Platform has articles focused on the work of new and innovative Nonprofit Partners as well as inspirational interviews with leaders from across our network of environmental changemakers.
