Workplace giving, also known as an employee giving campaign, is a program through which employees contribute—often via payroll deduction (funds removed from each paycheck)—to charities of their choosing. It’s similar to how retirement contributions come out of your paycheck automatically, only this money goes straight to the charity of your choosing. Most workplace giving campaigns also offer one-time cash, check, or credit card donation options.
Workplace campaigns occur at private companies, nonprofits, and in the public sector at local, state, federal, and department levels. Each workplace can determine which nonprofits are eligible to receive donations within their campaign. They can also choose to incorporate added benefits, such as gift matching or bonus paid time off, making workplace giving a customizable tool that reflects what the company stands for and what its employees care about. Companies that match donations tend to see an increase in staff engagement and donor gift size.
Businesses benefit by increasing the number of employees who feel more connected to and satisfied with their workplace. Participating nonprofits broaden their pool of supporters while receiving a reliable stream of donations throughout the year.
