Ugly_bug All creatures great and small…and ugly.

Scientists and ecologists alike have commented on the tendency for the less visually appealing endangered species to be left behind, while their cute and fuzzy counterparts receive protection. According to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service in a recent Washington Post article, this is starting to change. It seems more and more people are recognizing that creatures like the Orangefoot Pimpleback play a role just as crucial as that of polar bears and wolves.

“You can't disregard any of the pieces of the puzzle if you want to save all the pieces of the puzzle," says EarthShare member charity, Earthjustice. Fortunately, many of EarthShare’s members focus on helping threatened species, which run the gamut from bats to the prairie mole cricket. Want to help? The value of a park for kids? Priceless.

Park_kidS_TPL    For more than ten years, the New England community of Dorchester worked to convert an abandoned dump site into a park. Their efforts paid off recently as they celebrated the opening of their brand new outdoor recreation space with a ribbon-cutting ceremony and family fun. The cooperative effort was lead by EarthShare member charity Trust for Public Land (TPL), which has long touted the environmental, health, community-building and economic benefits of park systems.

This is just one converted city park or playground that TPL’s made possible. Learn more about the crucial role of these open spaces in TPL’s Center for City Park Excellence , a report analyzing how park systems economically benefit cities. Reality vs. Hollywood: sharks threatened by humans

Shark It’s the 35th anniversary of the filming of the movie Jaws, and as Oceana explains “…that 4th of July beach scene is probably never going to happen to you.” Why not? Sharks have no desire to eat humans, and such incidents are usually mistakes. Check out Oceana’s Shark Myths vs. Facts and Predators as Prey report to find out why.

The truth is that sharks should be more scared of you than you are of them. A new study shows that a third of open ocean sharks are threatened with extinction due to overfishing and other causes. But thanks to conservation groups, consumption of shark fin soup is dropping among Asian youth as awareness increases. It will take a long time to rebuild shark populations though because sharks grow slowly, mature late, and bear few offspring.

Learn more about ocean protection and play the Ocean Conservancy’s "Go, Fish!" game . You’ll be helping to make overfishing a thing of the past because $1 will be donated to the Ocean Conservancy for each player!

I believe all creatures are precious and I believe as humans we have a responsibility to do whatever we can to protect all endangered species.

Keith Potter

We need more people to become more aware of green consciousness and awareness. I don't think it's a hard sell. People want to help when they know they're contributing to some negatives in our environment.
