 "Renewable is doable!”

Power_ShiftThat was the message delivered by more than 10,000 young people who attended the Power Shift 09 conference last week to speak out about U.S. policies on energy and climate change. Their goal: to encourage elected officials to rebuild our economy and reclaim our future through bold climate and clean energy policy. Conference organizers testified before Congress in support of a climate change bill that would position America as a world leader. Event sponsors included EarthShare member charities such as the Natural Resources Defense Council, National Wildlife Federation and the World Wildlife Fund. Read WWF’s testimony to Congress about how the U.S. is falling behind the developing world in reducing emissions, and learn more about their Climate Program .

More youth leading the green charge

Getting the younger generation on board with environmental leadership is key to ensuring a greener, cleaner, brighter future for all of us. Earth Island Institute knows this, and this is why their New Leaders Initiative is working to nurture green achievers by raising the profile of young emerging environmental leaders in North America. The New Leaders Initiative celebrates their achievements and gives them the skills, resources, and relationships necessary to lead effective campaigns and projects.  Interested and eligible youth can also apply or be nominated for their 2009 Brower Youth Awards, which honor six young people for their outstanding activism and achievements in the fields of environmental and social justice advocacy. The Brower Youth Awards not only promote the accomplishments of these young leaders but also invest in their continued success by providing ongoing access to resources, mentors, and opportunities to develop their leadership skills. Applications are due May 15, 2009!

Five great reasons to eliminate junk mail

The average American receives 41 pounds of junk mail a year! Cutting this out of your life means you will:

1. Conserve 1.7 trees and 700 gallons of water.

2. Reduce chances of identity theft.

3. Help prevent global warming emissions.

4. Gain about 350 hours of free time that you used to spend sorting, shredding and recycling catalogs, credit card offers and other unwanted mail.

41pounds

EarthShare’s partner, 41pounds.org, can help you rid your life of all that waste by stopping your junk mail and catalogs. Which brings us to reason #5: For each person who signs up for their service here, 41pounds.org will donate more than 1/3 of the $41 fee to EarthShare and they’ll stop your junk mail for five years. The service covers your entire household, even if you move, get married or change your name, and they guarantee it. Simplify your life and help us reach our goal of raising $5000 by helping to erase junk mail from the planet – share this tip with a friend!
