Spiders and frogs and geckos – oh, my! EarthShare member Conservation International has discovered more than 50 species in the highlands of Papua New Guinea that are believed to be new to science.
Why are these discoveries important? Studying these species will provide decision makers with the tools necessary to help balance development with protecting biodiversity that benefits local communities and the global ecosystem.
And there’s much to learn. Six new jumping spiders were identified, and virtually nothing is known about one furry, brown jumping spider. The actions and existence of invertebrates like spiders make the life of other organisms possible! According to the expedition leader, these finds are even more exciting because they’re an indicator that there may be a lot more out there that we don’t know about.
Check out these unique and exciting animals. And if you missed our March 12 Ticker, visit it to learn more about the critical connection between biodiversity and human health.
Locally-grown food & healthy eating is on the White House agenda
The Obama’s have planted a vegetable garden on the South Lawn of the White House to maintain a source of local, fresh, and healthy food. The folks at the White House say the organic garden will provide food for family meals and formal dinners, and will also be used to educate kids about choosing healthy, locally grown fruit and vegetables at a time when obesity and diabetes have become a national concern.
You can do it, too. Growing your own food is a great way to stay healthy and save money. Check out Beyond Pesticides’ guide to Growing your own Organic Garden , and read more about the benefits of eating locally at the Center for a New American Dream’s Cater to the Earth blog. Already have a home garden? Tell us about it and send us photos – you might be featured on our site as an EarthShare Home Gardener!
Earth Day: Take our pledge and spread the word!
Earth Day , April 22, is fast approaching, and we want to make it easy for you to make a difference. To spread the word about protecting our planet, why not encourage your friends and family to commit to one of five simple actions for Earth Day – and pledge to take action yourself!
For instance, you could become an Environmental Champion at your school, workplace or church by holding a used electronics recycling drive. This will help reduce your community’s overall waste; last year 2.5 million tons of harmful electronics made its way into our landfills. Or, take a few minutes to stop your junk mail (this one small action will save 1.7 trees and conserve 500 gallons of water!)
Make your online pledge today! You’ll be eligible to win a special Earth Day gift from EarthShare! We’ll also email you to let you know how to follow through and the positive impact your effort will have. Kids vs. Global Warming
That’s the name of a group that was founded by young Alex Loorz after he saw Al Gore’s “An Inconvenient Truth.” Supported by EarthShare member Earth Island Institute, this group of more than 2,000 young people educates their peers through community activism, training sessions and presentations. Loorz’s message to his classmates: “Let’s work together to change the world, and not just occupy it.” Check out Kids vs. Global Warming’s latest project on CNN Tech and visit their site to learn more.
If you’re a young person looking for ways to get involved near you, check out EarthShare member the Student Conservation Association . They offer all kinds of opportunities for young people to get involved. Looking for inspiration? Check out National Wildlife Federation’s Climate Classroom called “ What’s up with Global Warming?”
