A “Blue Legacy”

Earlier this week, the outgoing administration announced plans to create a national monument to protect 195,000 square nautical miles of the Pacific Ocean, an area said to be larger than the state of California! Called the largest marine conservation effort in history, the aim is to protect the area from fossil fuel extraction and commercial fishing. EarthShare member the Ocean Conservancy believes this is also an historic opportunity for President-elect Obama to build a ‘truly blue legacy.’ Find out what Ocean Conservancy’s Executive Director Vikki Spruill has to say, and her suggestions for protecting and preserving the natural resource that covers 71% of our planet and provides most of the oxygen we breathe and much of the food we eat. >>MORE

Speaking of our oceans…

OceansLast week, the E.P.A. announced that cruise ships will be required to seek permits for dumping certain kinds of waste into U.S. waters, but many environmental groups say the rules would still allow the ships to dump untreated graywater as long as they’re more than one nautical mile offshore. Friends of the Earth’s Fred Felleman says the environmental damage cruise ships leave in their wake isn’t worth it. Watch Fred Felleman as he talks about the dangers of cruise ship pollution , and be sure to take a second to vote in the poll ! The researchers are concerned about the possible impact of pesticide-containing fruit juices on the health of children, who tend to consume large amounts of these beverages. Get Beyond Pesticides’ take on the topic, and learn how you can protect yourself and your family. >>MORE

Make E-Recycling your New Year’s resolution

Consider how many new electronics were purchased over the holidays and how many old ones will need to be disposed of as a result. Add to the mix an impending deadline for the switch to digital broadcasting which has many people dumping their old television sets. The answer? – E-Recycling! Oregon and Washington have taken action to help consumers act responsibly by offering free electronics recycling to residents. One facility in North Carolina has already collected 28,000 pounds of TVs ! Another option that offers rewards and can help support EarthShare: consider recycling your old electronics through MyBoneyard.com!
