As the country prepares to hail a new Chief, many are already hailing President-elect Obama's choices for several environment-related government posts. These include a new “Climate Czar” Carol Browner, Chair of the Board of the National Audubon Society, an EarthShare member charity, and Nobel Laureate physicist Steven Chu as energy secretary. Sonar suit settled…satisfactorily?

Environmentalists and the Navy agree that sonar may harm some marine mammals. What they don’t agree on is how much sonar affects whales, how many are affected, and what protective measures may be necessary. Now, thanks to a recently settled suit brought by environmental groups such as EarthShare member Natural Resources Defense Council, the Navy is required to do more testing to find out. According to the environmental organizations involved, midfrequency sonar used by the Navy for detecting enemy submarines disturbs and sometimes kills whales and dolphins by disrupting feeding patterns and, in some cases, causing whales to beach themselves. Learn more about this potential threat to marine mammals on Oceana’s website and find out how you can get involved. >> MORE

Resolutions for a fresh start!

You probably have a few of your own resolutions ready to go on January 1st, but we’d like to offer some in the shade of green for your consideration. There are so many easy changes we can adopt to make 2009 a healthier year for our planet and ourselves. Here are just a few of our favorites:

  • Resolve to recycle your used electronics this year instead of trashing or stashing them – you’ll keep potential toxics out of our landfills and clutter out of your drawers and garage!
  • Kick the bottled water habit and make a re-usable “ healthy plastic ” bottle your new constant companion. Even better – try one that filters regular old tap water for you! You’ll save money, you’ll know your water is clean, and you can help keep millions of plastic bottles out of the waste stream.
  • Learn how to use your spending power to shape a cleaner, greener world. According to the Big Green Purse, buying from companies whose goods protect the climate, eliminate toxins, keep the air and water clean, and safeguard forests and other natural places creates a powerful incentive for their rivals to do likewise.
